It’s almost December, and that means the musical year is effectively over: anything released between now and mid-February doesn’t really count. And the end of the music year can only mean one thing: it’s time to summarise the BEST songs and albums of the year!!!!!!!11111111
For me, 2011 was the year of not having earbuds and as such not being able to listen to music while commuting, working or going to the gym. A nice change of pace, truly. Furthermore, I don’t think I bought a single 12” all year - just can’t be bothered to unpack my decks. I went clubbing a bit, but not as much as in past years. In short, I didn’t listen to much music at all, which makes the following pieces of music all the more dear to me:
1. Avicii feat. Leona Lewis - Collide (Alex Gaudino & Jason Rooney Remix)
In my book, Leona Lewis is up there with Mariah, and I have sort of been dying for her to do something to this effect. By all means, the original mix is da bomb, but Alex Gaudino - of all people - took it to that next level. Commercial house music hasn’t been this much fun since 2006.
Six D - Best Damn Night
To me, this just sounds super-futuristic and fresh. Also I like it when songs are performed by dancing 12 year olds.
3. Sven Weisemann - Xine (Album)
Deep stuff this. I feel bad about praising Six D and Avicii when I listen to Weisemann, but you gotta vary your diet: you’ll die from malnutrition if you eat just one thing all day, be it broccoli or candy floss.
So that’s it, that’s pretty much all I listened to. You might even accuse me of not really being that into music, which is probably correct in a sense - I definitely spend more time watching TV, reading Zerohedge.com and looking at my favourite Sargent painting at Tate Britain than I do seeking out new, exciting music. Indeed, I think Like a G6 is one of the coolest songs ever, which probably says it all.
